The Essence of Beauty

Jose Carlos Sarmento recounts of his love for B&W Photography...

I was born in Ovar, a small town in the North of Portugal, in 1945. Currently, I live in Porto and work in Penafiel. I am an Paediatrician and I love work with Children. Photography, painting and music are my favourite hobbies.

Photography is a real Passion. I discovered photography in the 70’s and I used to photograph everything with my old Rolleiflex.

My photographic laboratory was my palace of dreams, where I would give life to the pictures I had dreamed of. Every subject interested me and I always carried my camera with me.

Lights, scintillation and surface lines guided my choices. Colours were superfluous. Colours I think distract the senses. Black and white pictures contain the essence of the pure beauty.

I started with a Rolleiflex, average format. Then, I passed to an Olympus OM1, 35 mm, a Nikon F80 that I still use for conventional photography.

When I discovered digital photography, I tried an Olympus Camedia 3030Z and I found it interesting and reliable.

Now, I use a Nikon D100 with Sigma lenses, and I am very pleased with this equipment.

My laboratory became a virtual place, where I work with my images in the same way I used to do with conventional techniques.

I always keep with me the memory of my father-in-law, Antonio, an excellent photographer, who led me through the magic fields of photography. I like to photograph everything – from people to rocks – for me, there is life and beauty everywhere. Photography is part of my soul.
